Satisfies the requirements laid out in #41 for stylesheet version 0.5.

Intentional differences:

  • refinements with zoom to increase legibility of labels and reduce noise
  • contour lines styled against a default "park" background

Additional possible refinements:

Might be worth labeling minor contour lines at zoom > 13 as these feel orphaned currently in low elevation areas.

Note that Maplibre incorporates specialized render properties when styling the hillshade data if it is processed as raster-dem and hillshade rather than just as a raster.

Slept on it and pushed this in the direction I think will maximize the visibility of trails, which I'd style to stand out against darker colors:

Final answer. Why not both?

The advantage to using a brighter/lighter color is that it aligns with other cartographic projects built on OpenStreetMap (Americana, OSM Carto) as well as with Google or Mapbox, for trail websites with one of these embedded currently.

The disadvantage is that it will be much harder to flip the visual hierarchy and make trails pop out compared to other features, particularly at the lowest zooms.

We can resolve this by using the darker palette for the QA render and the lighter palette for the reference map.
