This diff attempts to minimize the diff with upstream. We can definitely further minimize it, but this is a first attempt at making sure we stay as close as possible to it.

This diff attempts to minimize the diff with upstream. We can definitely further minimize it, but this is a first attempt at making sure we stay as close as possible to it. The general idea is to make merging simpler and more obvious.
