Why not use My Clippings.txt?

I could have, but I really liked the ability to open the Kindle highlight directly from Evernote. My Clippings.txt is missing a crucial piece of info to do this, the Amazon Standard Identification Number (ASIN).

Why use Gmail?

It's possible to connect to Evernote with OAuth and create notes. But then you have to worry about sign-in and tokens and URL parameters and so on and so forth. It's much easier to take advantage of Evernote's email capabilities.
