For your final paper, you are assigned to write a three-page paper about one of the most frequent vectors of an intruder to break in: passwords. You've learned, in this class about buffer overflows, cryptography breaking, and all the various defenses we put into a network. But despite all of this complex stuff, a lot of bad guys still get in via weak passwords.
Your assignment is to research this topic (for example, I typed security incidents because of weak passwords into Google and got a fair number of reasonable hits, or you could use Google Scholar for slightly meatier results). Based on your research, write a three page paper that addresses the following questions:
- How serious is the problem of weak passwords to modern computer security?
- Why are weak passwords still a problem?
- What technical and non-technical solutions do YOU think can make or are making a difference?
Your paper must adhere to the following requirements:
- Submitted in PDF
- Make an effort to follow APA style guidelines. You will only be graded down for egregious errors, such as bad grammar, misspelling, and so forth. However, you should generally follow guidelines for margins and so forth.
- Is at least 1250 words (between 2-3 pages single spaced, figures and images not included)
- Use figures and illustrations to help explain concepts (your own or others so long as external figures are cited)
- Cite all quotations AND PARAPHRASINGS!
- Include an appropriate bibliography (not included in word count)
Submit through Canvas. Submissions are due by 11:59 on May 19th. Grading will be as follows:
- 25% for describing the problem of passwords
- 25% for describing why passwords are a problem
- 50% for setting forth a persuasive argument for solutions
