Documentation formatting and cleanup

As of #93, the docs use a new theme. However, I've not gone through to make sure that there aren't minor cosmetic fixes that need to be made to accommodate this new theme. There are also likely several places in the narrative docs that are stale and could use tidying up.

This also includes fleshing out the docstrings a bit more.
