How to get page counter as integer?

I am trying to write a template that behaves differently on odd and even pages. I figured everything out, except for how to get the current page as an integer (in order to then check if it is odd or even using the rem function).

Any ideas on how to do that?

Try this:

#locate(loc => {
  counter(page).at(loc).at(0)
})

locate always returns content, but I need an integer.

EDIT: Ooooh, I can of course wrap my whole content in the locate().

So, in case anyone needs it, here is my code that displays:

• the last first-level headline on left pages
• the last second-level headline on right pages
• the page number always on the outer side of the page

Note that a better option is

#locate(loc => {
   loc.page()
})

unless you override the page counter yourself (this returns the "real" page).
