user_info_by_username() slow?

Are there any sleeps built into the user_info_by_username() function or functions it calls? It seems to be kind of slow. I was not able to find any sleeps following its functions down to their lowest levels but it seems to perform kind of slowly. Is this just the time it takes for requesting and receiving the data from instagram?

Will this result in hitting a rate limit sooner since user_info_by_username() automatically handles switching from private to public requests if limited?

Now automatically switches from public to private, but not vice versa
