To be clear, indents show when I start editing the code but I'd have expected they should show as soon as the code is opened.

Hey @iftg, thanks for reporting and the clarification. I can confirm that indent guides are not shown after its respective option is enabled.
We'll try to fix that in a future 6.0.x version.
