Researcher workshop brainstorming

The QGreenland-Net team plans to host a workshop for researchers sometime in 2026. We think we want this to come after the dev hackathon to give as much time as possible for feature development of the OGDC.

To think more about:

• Structure and content
  • We think we might be able to leverage content from the 2023 qgreenland researcher workshop, but some content would need to be updated. We would also want to review feedback we received and make adjustments based on that. The 2023 workshop focused on the basics of geospatial data best practices, and tried to focus on the use of standard GDAL CLI for exploring/fixing/transforming geospatial data.
  • The ADC has experience hosting trainings (see https://arcticdata.io/training/) that we may be able to pull content from
  • Should we focus on OGDC usage as it applies to polar research needs? Or would that just be one component of a broader workshop that focuses on geospatial data management practices (like the 2023 workshop)?
• Supporting infrastructure
  • For the 2023 workshop, we utilized Cryocloud for a hosted data processing environment (participants used Jupyterhub and the Cryocloud desktop interface to interact with QGreenland and explore data). If we want to utilize cryocloud again we need to coordinate with the cryocloud community early on to ensure we have access & adequate resoruces
  • I imagine this would be a virtual workshop like the one in 2023, but if we want to consider in-person, we should think about venue, etc.
• Participant selection
  • How many participants? We had ~25 in the 2023 workshop.
  • Other requirements/preferred qualifications for participants? We will need to develop a registration process so that we can review and select final participants.
• Timing
  • We plan on this taking place sometime after the dev hackathon in year 3.
  • Length? The 2023 workshop was 3 days from 9am-1pm mountain time, and a 4th day with some optional office hours for follow-up questions/work.
