Dev hackathon/workshop brainstorming

The QGreenland-Net team plans to host a hackathon for developers in late 2025/early 2026.

To think more about:

• Structure and content. Do we want this to be more free-form hacking with some pre-planned ideas for tasks/goals to tackle, or do we want a more structured "workshop"-style event where we have a specific goal that folks work toward? Some content-ideas below:
  • development of OGDC recipes for various high-value datasets. We could have breakout groups focused on different datasets.
  • Updates to the QGreenland core data package to extract data processing via luigi in favor of the OGDC.
  • Abstracting the QGreenland core package code to support more generic projects. "QAnywhere".
  • Onboarding new repos to dataone? I'm assuming this might take more direct interaction between data archivists and folks at the ADC? Or are there some technical bits a group of devs could take on to expand dataholdings in dataone?
• Supporting infrastructure
  • Do we want to plan on using cryocloud? If so, we should plan on coordinating with the Cryocloud community early on to ensure we can have access/adequate resources
  • Ensure we have contributing guidelines, code-of-conduct, and robust documentation for components we want developers to work on
  • I imagine this would be a virtual hackathon, but if we want to consider in-person, we should think about venue, etc.
  • Will hackers need access to ADC k8s? Some other k8s cluster for workshop use?
• Participant selection
  • How many people should we target for the hackathon? 10-15?
  • Other requirements/preferred qualifications for participants? We will need to develop a registration process so that we can review and select final participants.
• Timing
  • We think this will be "late year 2", which is late 2025/early 2026
  • Greenland Science Week in Nuuk is in Nov. 2025, and we plan on sending some of us to that
  • We think this hackathon would be best scheduled for before the researcher workshop.
  • Length? A few days with a few hours each? Or 1-2 full days?
