"Killed: 9" for gcc and related binaries

I installed gcc but invoking e.g. gcc-11 or g++-11 does not work:

$ opt/homebrew/bin/gcc-ar-11 
Killed: 9

Whats wrong here and/or what can I do to fix it?

GCC was installed like this:

$ brew install gcc

Homebrew was installed like this:

cd ~/opt
mkdir homebrew
curl -L https://github.com/Homebrew/brew/tarball/master | tar xz --strip 1 -C homebrew

I can't install Homebrew in the default /opt/homebrew because I use multiple user accounts for private and work use.

I'd try to do

brew reinstall $(brew deps gcc)

If that doesn't work, try attaching gcc-11 to a debugger to get a backtrace. That should hopefully produce something useful.

Beyond that I can't help much -- there are very many things that cause broken builds. I'd strongly suggest reconsidering your decision not to use Homebrew's default prefix.

I'd gladly use the single default prefix! I did so with MacPorts for a long time. But Homebrew only supports installed packages to be accessible by a single user (IIUC), per an official Homebrew developer:

I'd expect all data installed by Homebrew to be world-readable and all installed software to be runnable by any user.

That's not how homebrew works. Homebrew is only designed for single user usage.

I don't see why the latter forces the former. In fact, since you're already segregating daily activities into multiple accounts, you might as well add one more just for Homebrew package management, thus neatly segregating software management from everything else.
