Within the framework of the project Open Research Data Platform Switzerland (ORD@CH), FORS (lead institution), the Digital Humanities Lab of the University of Basel, and the ETH Scientific IT Services / SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics are developing a publication platform for open research data in Switzerland. The platform will be operational as a pilot project in spring 2015. It will essentially offer a metadata catalogue of the data available at the participating institutions. The ORD@CH project is part of the program „Scientific information: access, processing and safeguarding“, initiated by the Rectors‘ Conference of Swiss Universities (Program SUC 2013-2016 P-2), and runs from July 2014 to December 2015. From 2016 onwards, the platform is planned to be continued as a permanent metadata infrastructure for open research data in Switzerland.

Objectives of the ORD@CH project

Promotion of secondary analysis of research data

The primary goal of the metadata catalogue is to offer the different scientific communities the possibility to find data outside of their respective institutions, projects, disciplines, and data archives, and to promote use of these data for secondary analyses.

Performance indicator for publicly funded research programs

Well-documented and easily accessible data are an important performance indicator for research projects. The Open Research Data Platform Switzerland is a useful tool to make more visible the data produced by a research project or a research program.

Promotion of interdisciplinary approaches in research and teaching

The ORD@CH metadata catalogue will help to give researchers, professors, and students an overview of the available research data in Switzerland across many different academic domains, and to open up new perspectives by linking data from different disciplines.

Access to publicly funded research data for the general public

Since a considerable part of research is publicly funded, everyone should have the right to get to know and use those data. The publication of research data via the ORD@CH platform will help Swiss research institutions to fulfill this obligation to the general public.

Progressive integration of additional databases

Even during the pilot phase, it will already be possible for other research institutions to integrate into the publication platform. This process should eventually lead to a comprehensive metadata infrastructure for open research data in Switzerland.
