openshift-logging: UI plugin does not seem to work

After installing the OKD logging operator and deploying Loki and a logging instance, one needs to enable the console UI plugin in order to have access to the logging stack from the web console. The installed operator signals that the plugin is available and I can "enable" it. When doing so, there is no error but the plugin does not show up in the web console.
