I have an M1 Mac and I am a developer - so I can help debug this issue if someone is willing to give me pointers.

It doesn't. This is an issue.

In theory all we need is something to (1) trigger the System Preferences > Accessibility > Display > Invert colors setting (plus perhaps one of the Color filters) and (2) set the desktop image to solid white.

I wonder if this could be accomplished with Shortcuts. It would be nice to have an application, but maybe starting from scratch is easier than maintaining this one?

Interesting discovery: in System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts you can enable Invert colors and then control that setting with a keyboard shortcut.
