This requires fixing an upstream bug in JupyterLab: jupyterlab/jupyterlab#16479

I opened jupyterlab#17121 that address this

The above PR was merged and will be released with jupyterlab 4.4.0. @krassowski, can I go ahead and close this issue, or should I wait until it is released?
