I think the two viable options are:

  • Setup redirect chains (maintain a list of old slugs)
  • Ask to create a URL once on creation then no more editing (could be undesirable)

i lean towards option 2, but let's come back to this once we've used it a bit.

I searched for this repository to mention that redirects should be used. It could be abused, but presumably so could the rest of the application. There is the question of whether someone should be able to reclaim a URL that is currently a redirect. If they can, they could intercept someone using an outdated link, but if they can't, someone could create a long redirect chain taking as many URLs as they want (unless it's limited somehow), but again, they could already take the URLs by making new projects.
