Can't open the UI

I've successfully installed opensnitch on a new install of Debian 10 (KDE Plasma desktop) by (1) installing python3-grpcio python3-protobuf python3-slugify, then (2) installing opensnitch*.deb and python-2*.deb per the readme instructions. Immediately on opening a browser, opensnitch prompts for permission, so it is running. So far, so good.

However, I cannot open the UI. KDE "finds" it and places it in the app launcher, but it won't open; no success either from the terminal ("opensnitch-ui"). I found a discussion from 2018 on the original opensnitch by evilsocket, suggesting to edit the service.py and prompt.py files (changing "from config" to "from opensnitch.config" etc), but that did not help.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi @JTeim ! First of all, what version did you install?
Also close the UI if it's running by right-clicking on the systray icon, and launch it from a terminal (or just launch it from a terminal if there's no sysray icon), and post the output here.

Good afternoon, and thank you for your reply. I installed opensnitch_1.3.0.rc-2_amd64. The UI is not running , the the command line output is attached.

aah, ok, we're not longer developing opensnitch on this repo (there's a warning note on the releases sections).

Please, install 1.3.5 from here and let me know if it works:

We're making progress (thank you!). Installed the correct version. UI icon appears on KDE panel, and it launches the UI window. That's the good news. The bad news is, the screen upper-right-hand-corner states "disabled".

If I close opensnitchd and opensnitch-ui from the system monitor, then....

(1) The opensnitch icon no longer appears on the KDE panel.

(2) Opening opensnitch via the KDE app launcher does nothing.

(3) Opening from the terminal results in ......

=> "qt.qpa.screen: WxcbConnection: Could not connect to display

opensnitchd

=> Loading rules from /root/rules ... Path '/root/rules/ does not exist

The system monitor shows both opensnitchd and opensnitch-ui are running. However, the UI cannot be opened, and there are no longer any request for permission.

My apologies if I have missed something; this is my 1st Debian build.

Ok, let's do this:

1. open a terminal, and login as root using sudo su
2. kill any opensnitch process that may be running: service opensnitchd stop; pkill -9 opensnitchd opensnitch-ui
3. Start the daemon: service opensnitchd start
4. Check that the daemon is running: pgrep -a opensnitchd , if it's not: execute it from command line (as root) as follow: /usr/bin/opensnitchd -rules-path /etc/opensnitchd/rules
5. Let it running on that terminal. It should not exit by any means.
6. Open another terminal, and launch the GUI opensnitch-ui

At this point, if there's any error you'll see in on the terminals, so copy whatever it outputs and paste it here.

We know that the version 1.3.5 has some bugs, but installing it for the first time should work just out of the box, so lets see if we can understand why it's not working on your system!

Thank you very much for the logs. In principle the daemon is working fine and the GUI has been installed correctly. Let's keep investigating why it doesn't show up.

Do you use root as your regular user? Could you try to launch opensnitch-ui as a normal user (i.e.: without root privileges) from a terminal and paste the output?

By the way, I made a typo: it's not service opensnitchd stop (or start), but service opensnitch stop (sorry for that..)

When I found that opensnitch re-opens itself even after a "killall" command or after closing in via KDE's System Monitor, I removed the package. So, tomorrow I will re-install it and report back. In the meanwhile, two questions: (1) To ensure a clean install, are there any other packages or files that I should delete from the prior install? (I did an apt remove command per your instructions, not a purge or other command.) (2) Is there a way to prevent this package (or any other) from re-opening itself after it has been closed ?

You don't need to perform a clean install. Per your logs all is being installed fine.

Yes, sorry, I forgot to mention it. It's relaunched by systemd, so if you kill it systemd will relaunch it again. Stop it with service opensnitch stop.

And launch opensnitch-ui from a terminal but with a user without root privileges. Or at least not with the user root.

We're very close to discover this mystery!

As far as I can tell, the daemon and the GUI are running ok. The problem is that the UI doesn't appear then.
You should open the GUI even if the daemon is not running. So let's forget about the daemon for now.

Ok, do you see an small icon in the systray? like this one:

If yes, double-click on it and select "events".

Note: The GUI is not a systemd service, that's why service opensnitch-ui stop doesn't work. You only can kill it using pkill or kill

The icon was there the first time I installed opensnitch (see my first post here - the UI window did open, but status was "disabled"). Since then, I have not been able to replicate that behavior. Even after removing both opensnitch and python...-ui (confirmed by a dpkg --list command), then re-installing, the icon is not there.
