Is there any way to draw a tubes plot left-to-right rather than top-to-bottom? I'm wanting to compare e.g. population sizes (on the Y) with time (on the X), so it would be nice to be able to draw the tube plot as the top panel of a subplot, and have a bottom panel that can share the X-axis with the tube plot

I thought there was a way to do something like this with matplotlib, but I've searched a little and have come up blank. Sorry. I guess it would require careful modification of all the plotting code and coordinate calculations in order to implement this properly.
I've got a vague memory of @mufernando asking about this once too - did I imagine this? Did you come up with any solution?
