Is there interest in updating the package to use this data source?

There is a .bil file available here: https://s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/data.gaezdev.aws.fao.org/HWSD/HWSD2_RASTER.zip that might be a direct replacement?

Currently {hwsdr} is used to pull point location data efficiently without an overhead of data management on the user side. I hope the latest version will be pushed to ORNL, or another API will be provided by the data producers themselves, to continue working this way.
