How does format work?

I looked in the docs, but I cant find it.
How can I format the output? Currently it simply replaces the output for me

fastfetch --help reads

General module options:
    --<module>-format <format>:    Set the format string to use for each specific module.
                                   To see how a format string works, use fastfetch --help format.
