Upload via arduino-cli to pico from raspberry pi not working (No drive to deploy)

hello,
I've followed the installation steps twice, on my mac and on my raspberry pi (lite, 5).
On the mac, arduino-cli upload works as expected,
on the pi, I keep getting

arduino-cli compile -b rp2040:rp2040:rpipico test
...
arduino-cli upload -p /dev/ttyACM0 -b rp2040:rp2040:rpipico test
Scanning for RP2040 devices
No drive to deploy.

I'm using the default options in both cases, the same sketch and the same pico board.
Also, upload on the pi using -b arduino:mbed_rp2040:pico works as well.

What am I missing?

switched to using the picotool upload method... that seems to work.
