I'd like to port this project to ROS2 which could be a secondary branch, but is it as straight forward as rewriting all the functionalities with ROS2 libraries/tools and using ROS2 branches of the other repositories used then testing it or is there something that would prevent me from doing so?

Hmm, I'm afraid I don't have enough experience with ROS2 to get a sense of how much content from this repo is directly recyclable.
