With pymel no longer being distributed with Maya and there being issues with 3rd-party upkeep and distribution of pymel (LumaPictures/pymel#474), would you consider removing the pymel dependency in future?

Oof, yeah, I'm really bummed that they're not maintaining that well 😞
But yes, I think it would make sense to split the api into a couple layers so the core does not use pymel, and then maintain the pymel-node-supporting api as an 'if-available' layer above that.
