i believe letting non-authed users to search the existing recipes would be a nice way to convince them to register — keeping the action buttons visible, and pop a sign-up modal when they click

I really like this idea. I've been thinking of allowing users to make individual recipes "public" (right now, recipes are only visible to users who follow you). Then, on the home page, we'd have a search box to search for public recipes. When you come across a recipe, you can then have the option of following that person / creating your own, which requires user login.
