LaTeX equations don't display correctly. #34

Hello,

As a physics student, I'm using LaTeX on Obsidian every day to write my formulas and equations.

I was searching for a plugin which would help me to display my lectures notes to my colleagues, and I discovered your amazing plugin so first of all, thank you so much.

Now about my issue. I was uploading one of my lectures note and I noticed that LaTeX equations missed some letters and greek letters.
I think that some letters (like k, A and f) aren't working, and all greek letters are not working at all. Watch this: https://share.note.sx/h9re66zw

You will find also another lecture note inside, that is correctly working with LaTeX but there is no greek letter on.

I confess I don't know much about LaTeX, but when I visit your shared link I do see lots of A's, k's, and f's:

If the above image looks correct, then it's probably just something cached at your end. Please try opening your note in a private browsing / Incognito window to check.

Somehow it is working again correctly, I'm really confused.

I didn't touched anything to my web browser and everything is working as expected...

PS: A little suggestion before closing this, is it possible to add a function to be able to share pdf/epub files? It could be really helpful as well.

It will be that the CSS was originally built without the LaTeX components, and then cached on your browser.

When the plugin re-built it with the LaTeX components, your browser kept showing the cached CSS without those components existing.

Now your local cache has expired and you see the updated CSS.

I'm getting the same issue after clearing browser cache and using browsers that have never seen note.sx, see this note.

@TheColorman did you follow the Troubleshooting steps and recreate the CSS? You need to do that for the MathJax styles to appear. By default Obsidian doesn't include any MathJax styles, so the original time your CSS was created it wouldn't have included them.

There's definitely a problem with CSS being uploaded. There's a style tag with id MJX-CHTML-styles that includes all the styling for all math. Here is the one in my local obsidian and the one present on the site after sharing a note:

👆 Opening up devtools (ctrl+shift+i) and looking at the styles for math, then force re-uploading all assets seems to have fixed the site version for me so try that out if you also have this problem.

To add to this, it seems like the css styles are generated dynamically as you open different notes. E.g. if a latex $k$ is not in you current note, you won't get css for it, but if you then open a note that has it, the css will get added. When the plugin accesses the html document, there might be some caching going on that gets an old version of the css, and opening up the actual style tag in the devtools reloads this cache.

As @TheColorman says:

To add to this, it seems like [within Obsidian itself] the css styles are generated dynamically as you open different notes. E.g. if a latex is not in you current note, you won't get css for it, but if you then open a note that has it, the css will get added.

So if you're missing any Latex components, my suggestion would be to create a "Latex master CSS" note with any components you find missing, and then Force reupload just that one note to make sure all the CSS is built and used for all your other individual notes.

I just ran into this issue again with the note I linked to before, and a 2nd note in my vault. The troubleshooting steps did work, but that leads me to question what is different between editing mode and reading mode that's causing this issue? How would I go about trying to figure it out?

It's really easy to forget whether or not I've updated a note, and whether or not I remembered to put it in reading mode first, so I can't tell if I made an update that broke it again without noticing, or if it happened on its own..

Edit: So I just realized that because the troubleshooting page is so brief, I've accidentally been following the troubleshooting steps for forcing a re-upload, and not the linked to separate page on LaTeX in particular. I will try that workaround and hope I don't end up in the loop I accidentally caught myself in.
