After a bit of research, Vanilla OS would definitely be my recommendation if a Linux-based device were to be sold in the shelves of Walmart, Costco, Best Buy, and more, as it's super secure and has the GNOME experience and apps, and it also isn't tied up to any corporate BS (like Ubuntu having a paid version with exclusive bugfixes along with the controversial SNAP, proprietary Ubuntu One stuff, and having an Amazon shortcut for a while, and Zorin OS). However, I kind of would support the setup wizard in the future to allow users to choose between GNOME and KDE DEs in the future and if KDE is chosen, optionally allow the KDE apps to be installed (either keeping GNOME apps or replacing most or all). Show screenshots and make clear descriptions for any Linux newbies.
