The screenshot is too large at times — a bit difficult to follow the flow of the instructions. I wonder if it is possible to have a medium thumbnail but can pop up a larger version when clicked?

For #2 screenshots, my pro-tip / life-hack is to make sure you take a very wide screenshot. It auto-stretches it to fill the centre column. So for a small thumbnail, or tall/thin image, "pad" it with some extra blank space on the side. That way it will consume less vertical height. Like this image. Or like in this CodeLab.
For #2 - You could increase the size of the content area, it's currently 800px but this could alter or shift the way thumbnails are currently being displayed and could possibly effect older codelabs. I would not alter it without doing some testing across codelabs before pushing it to PROD.
