How to link hydrogen project to a store?

I'm trying to learn how Hydrogen works and I created a Shopify store and project with npm create @shopify/hydrogen@latest but when I attempt to link it to my store it errors with the following:

Access denied for hydrogenStorefronts field. Required access: Request must be initiated 
from the Shopify CLI and user must have full access to apps or access to the Hydrogen channel.

I can't find anywhere in the Shopify store where I grant this access. Any guidance is appreciated.

This version of Hydrogen (v1) is deprecated. The correct repository for Hydrogen is https://github.com/Shopify/hydrogen

The Hydrogen sales channel isn’t available on your plan.

Should specify in the docs that you need a monthly paid plan to use the hydrogen sales channel. You can't connect your shopify store via hydrogen otherwise

No way to get past Step 3 in the Hydrogen docs without a paid plan, right?

A bit difficult to experiment and test things out in Hydrogen as-is :/
