Eating should probably relate to natural regeneration somewhat. My idea is this:

The hunger bar:

  • Is constantly lowering
  • If the player eats, it fills
  • While the player has food in their stomach, they get passive regeneration
  • While the player has an empty stomach, they do not passively regenerate
  • The player cannot starve to death!

What I would do:

  • Your hunger bar will only deplete when regenerating health.
  • When the hunger bar is empty, the player cannot regen health.
  • The player has to eat to fill up their hunger bar again.

I don't like a progressively losing hunger bar, careeoki's idea is better

I also prefer carrie's idea and I would like to add some further ideas:

I think that the food bar should be balanced such that you refill it once before battle, but not during battle. I think it's ridiculous that people pull out a steak in the middle of fighting in minecraft. That's why I propose the following:

  • passive regeneration should be slower, more like in Terraria. It should take at least a few minutes to passively regenerate the entire health bar.
  • food and health shouldn't convert 1:1, instead 1 unit of food should be able to heal multiple units of health (maybe that ratio could be affected by accessories?). This means that you likely won't run out of food even in a longer fight.
  • Eating should give you a temporary debuff to simulate digestion, maybe slowness and weakness. This discourages eating during a fight.

Oh and also:

That sounds good to me. I like the idea of food not being the main source of health regen (that could go to potions and whatnot)
