[Home page] Evaluate content and display #65

@roccosomazzi Above is a running list of elements we have or want on the home page. As mentioned in #2 (comment) I think we could add a few blocks for featured content (inc artists, videos, interviews, and upcoming festival events/tickets on the page, rather than just providing links. If you look at https://www.sfjazz.org/, they provide a good bit of inspiration. What do you think about that approach? |

The problem is that we shouldn’t have duplicate blocks on the homepage and
the festival page. The artist, events should just be only on the festival
page.

The displays would be different - I'm envisioning all the festival artists/dates on the ACJ page, but the home page could display a few upcoming events for a given week. |

Following up on home page related stuff in this issue -
Seems like something close to the shortcode I added for the 2020 VR Festival Line-Up could work - as mentioned in #5 (comment) I think we could display upcoming or featured artists here on the homepage and then all the artists on the festival page. Might be easier for me to set up the block since it might require some styling. Just tell me what you think should go there.
So you're thinking a block similar to the Watch grid we now have on https://content-angelcityjazz.pantheonsite.io/angel-city-jazz-fest/ on the home page? I'm thinking a format once again inspired by https://www.sfjazz.org/ where we'd display the entire post in a block could work. If that kinda makes sense I could add a few just to see how it looks. |

I went ahead and replaced your events with a shortcode that displays events with a category 'featured'. I can replace with one that will automatically list a certain amt of upcoming events once I figure out how to do that. I also cropped the featured images so the display would be consistent. Is this close to what you were looking for? |

Yes, something like that works. We can then maybe program a button below
that says see full festival schedule or something like that.

I added a button and adjusted the column size. It might be cool to replicate the slider on https://events.kcrw.com/events/, if I can work through this process I pointed to https://content-angelcityjazz.pantheonsite.io/angel-city-jazz-fest/ since 'I think' it make sense to have a similar one column cover display all the events on that page. |

Hi Gus a few observations:
- for the homepage, what's gonna happen when we have no upcoming event?
Should we include recent posts to that block?
- can you reduce the height of the Get Involved & Newsletter boxes
- regarding the exploration page, can we set-it up to feature the new
article I started to publish under the Artist Spotlight category in
addition to the archival posts?
https://content-angelcityjazz.pantheonsite.io/artist-spotlight/billy-higgins/
https://content-angelcityjazz.pantheonsite.io/artist-spotlight/ornette-coleman
These pages are very barebones now but we will add videos, photos and more
text soon. I'm hoping to have a regular series of these written

Hey Rocco - We definitely want to showcase featured and recent content on the home page. We can mix in additional content at times when there are no events. I'll spend some more time formatting and theming the landing pages after setting up a few examples of the ticketing/rsvp flow on the dev site #6 (comment) |

I added the Post Carousel block on https://theme-angelcityjazz.pantheonsite.io just to see how that might look on the homepage. There are several ways we can filter what and how it appears - If you think that might work, I'll enable on the content site and incorporate into the theme. |

That's fine but can you add By Greg Burk - metaljazz.com? and I would leave
the date out for now.
Also Greg will write about 15 pieces and wants to categorize them in these
three categories: The L.A. Founders, The L.A. Apostles and The L.A.
Torchbearers
I tried to create subcategories under the Artist SPotlight one but I'm not
sure it's working. Any suggestions on how to add this info?
thanks

THe exploration articles should be secondary to the festival events. In
this example the Billy Higgins article is way to prominent.

Makes sense. Possibly we can implement after the festival using the 'post' content type for video archives of the performances. |

@angelcityjazz referencing your comment from #5 (comment) and reopening this issue so we can take a fresh look at the home page....
Personally, I think a section that displays select archives works really well. Maybe we could just rename the section 'Watch' and have to 'more' button link to https://angelcityjazz.com/watch/? We could also add the section displaying the upcoming events. That will require displaying with a shortcode. Also... depending on how many upcoming posts you anticipate, we might want to consider replacing/reworking the recent posts section with a full-width slider display. Would be easier to evaluate if I mocked up a page on stage. I can take some time to do so if you'd like. |

https://angelcityjazz.com/staging/6473/
Couple notes -
- slider - currently set to show 'events' and 'explorations'
categories but we could display pretty much anything we want
- events section - defaults to 3 columns, so not sure if it'll work
unless there are at least three upcoming events
- watch - currently set to display 6 just to see what that looks like;
we could easily display 3 and select which ones we'd like to display (by
tagging them 'favorites')
- explorations/young artist competition - probably still works if
you're planning to run the competition this year?
Anyhow - let me know your thoughs and/or additional suggestons on what's
there.

@angelcityjazz Responding to #38 (comment) here as it's related to the home page. I added the 'no-vertical-margin' css class to the image and section directly underneath. Seemed to do the trick. Agreed - the animation looks great!! |

@angelcityjazz Re-opening this issue so we can evaluate https://acjdev.wpengine.com/ before going live. Here are couple things to review:
Looking at it now, I still really like the Explorations / Young Artist Competition section, but the latter hasn't happened in a few years. If it's not happening this year, we may want to replace that section with something else (probably not before going live with #58). There are elements of sponsor/parter section that could still be improved. Might consider overhauling after we push the events. I'll review whatever comments you leave when I get back in front of a computer this evening. |

I like the new color combo. As for the young artist competition, we’ e
applied for a grant to restart it, but it would probably be for next year.

Hey @angelcityjazz I was doing the platform updates the other day and noticed you swapped out last year's banner (on https://angelcityjazz.com/) with what looks like the same image as https://angelcityjazz.com/angel-city-jazz-fest/ Was good to remove the old banner (I forget what we've done in the past) but using the same image seems a bit redundant (and takes up quite a bit of vertical space). I was wondering how it would look if we added the carousal (we tested a few times but don't think we ever implemented). So I added one to https://acjstg.wpengine.com/ and reformatted the recent posts block. What do you think of the general idea/look/feel? |

Hey Rocco - I implemented the carousel on https://angelcityjazz.com/ (this it looks/works pretty good!) - right now it's set to display 4 posts categorized as Explorations. We can modify to filter on multiple categories, tags, or even specific posts. With a bit of modification on the back end, we should be able to display Events. I cloned production to https://acjstg.wpengine.com/ so feel free to play around with the settings w/out worrying about breaking anything. Also check out the logo and let me know if it's too small (I minimized after realizing how much space the larger size we're using on https://angelcityjazz.com/ is taking up - especially on a mobile device). With regards to the 2021 schedule - the shortcode was properly set to pull in events for October 2021 but for some strange reason, it was pulling in a few from 2022. I added another filter (displaying just a certain number of events) to fix. Let me know what you think of the carousel, logo size, and anything else content wise leading up to this years fest. |
