AUGUST

  • ACCOMPLISHMENTS - Fellows
We're moving forward with the joint onboarding in Toronto, CA, September 12-16th.
Our planning materials are stored here and we're working on a schedule that will subsequently split into multiple planning pads in prep for the fellows. We've sketched out roughly 4-days of mixed cross-program work, bookended by all-Mozilla introductions and events, and including a two days of deep dives into our respective programs.
  • ACCOMPLISHMENTS - R&R
Initiated implementation of two pilot programs to energize network members.
--- A program to engage network members within the professional profile (within network audience profiles) has been started and a selection of these members have been recruited to the MLN Advisory Group - where they will be able to provide support and guidance to the evolution of the MLN. Candidates or preferred members for the MLN Advisory Group have been identified, and invitations have been sent, with a few confirmation received.
--- A recognition and appreciation program targeting the professional, emerging leaders and young leaders profile (within network audience profiles) has been launched. Requests for nomination have been sent out, and approx 25 nominations received. The target is to complete the nomination phase with approx 75 nominations. Next step will be to shortlist, and then finally identify 50 'winners'
  • LEARNINGS (What challenges did we face/what went well/what did we learn?)
We've also done a lot of work over the past few months templating resources and preparing joint calendars and have weekly meetings between ourselves, as well as monthly checkins with other internal fellowship stakeholders (Steph, Kaitlin, Sara). I think a lot of the progress relates to learning how to work together efficiently and incorporate feedback while still moving toward a clear gone and some really real deadline dates. For R&R program, various operational constraints have been removed or managed re R&R pilots.
  • PRIORITIES FOR NEXT MONTH (What are we focusing on next?)
Planning a program of activities and materials that are highly coordinated and professional, if pretty flexible given the differences between our programs. Perhaps followup post-onboarding with Chad and An-Me in our potentially ongoing checkins around fellowship design, etherpad here. For R&R program, we'll complete the nomination cycle, and finalize the winning/shortlisted recipients
  • ON TRACK? BLOCKED? (List dependencies, or collaborations with other teams at MoFo/MoCo)
    On track for both

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
On track with the R/R programs. Received approx 140 nominations, with approx 300 additional feedback on these nominations from staff.
12 MLN Advisory Group members finalized
LEARNINGS (What challenges did we face/what went well/what did we learn?)
The amount of time it takes for these nomination exercises, with a distributed workforce, travel commitments and other urgent deadlines.
PRIORITIES FOR NEXT MONTH (What are we focusing on next?)

  1. Evaluating and stack-ranking nominations so we get to the final list of 50 'winners'.
  2. Preparing to 'on-board' Advisory Group Members as part of the second

  • ACCOMPLISHMENTS - Fellows

All went well with the joint onboarding for the fellows; we conducted an orientation with 10 fellows present and 2 remote, which included a creative tech setup for continuous video-chat and coordinated activities to accommodate all attendees.

We programmed 5 days of activities, evening events and dinners around Toronto, introducing the fellows to local Mozillians (in the Toronto office, on the Project Call, in our fireside chats with M. Surman + K. Thaney to introduce MLN), extended community (Citizen Lab, a host org for one of the Open Web Fellows), and funders/sponsors (from Mozilla Advocacy + the Ford Foundation).

  • LEARNINGS (What challenges did we face/what went well/what did we learn?)
    • Adaptability is important We learned that flexiblity is important in program planning, there were swag items that didn't arrive in time, visas that didn't come through at the last minute, issues with the schedule that necessitated daily debriefs and restructuring
    • Accountability is extremely important We also documented much of the week pretty obsessively, and assigned documentation tasks to ourselves and the fellows. We were proud of their interest in self organization but recognized that there needed to be specific point-people to pilot follow-up work, and we assigned those point people throughout the week and wrote follow-up emails to encourage them.
  • PRIORITIES FOR NEXT MONTH (What are we focusing on next?)
    • packaging up and printing the Zines (one of the activities for the week, where fellows make small-photo-copyable magazines to distribute at Mozfest around a topic of interest and relevant to their fellowships
    • setting up protocols for weekly checkins between the fellows, chat room conversation in gitter and mattermoz
    • planning the next group meetup in Berlin (February) where we will again rejoin to revisit onboarding goals and move forward with prototyped projects.
  • ON TRACK? BLOCKED? (List dependencies, or collaborations with other teams at MoFo/MoCo)

On track, will probably reach out to Berlin folks closer to our Workweek there. Links to evaluations and reference agendas below:

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Fellow's work and progress for this month
All is grand, we just wrapped up an amazing Mozfest replete with joint fellows' activities, lightning talks, and zine printing (special H/T + 😍 to @vanessarhinesmith for getting that done).

We're working on a joint workweek for January / February (likely the second week in February) and have selected San Francisco as our likely meeting location. @vanessarhinesmith and I are working out details there, but it should be a great opportunity to:

  • revisit goals defined during the previous workweek
  • capitalize on the opportunity for productive co-working
  • remind the fellows of their extended network and cohort
  • provide a debrief on Working Open Workshops and encourage/require them to run a workshop in their local communities in March/April

We're hoping to activate more communities around the fellows' current contexts, and work toward building a network that will spread our fellowship resources beyond our most immediate contacts and recipients.

LEARNINGS
What challenges did we face/what went well/what did we learn?

  • Adaptability is important Same as last update, but we've pivoted on location, program, activities, and provisions for our fellows to accommodate office availabilities (Berlin for example is still in limbo office-wise so we decided on an agreeable alternative based on staff and fellow distribution)
  • Consistency and ritual is extremely important We recognize from the survey feedback we received that the fellows really wanted to maintain connections outside their cohort, while having the opportunity to make progress on their individual projects and connect more with our program goals at the Foundation...lots of our planning and venue decisions have taken these recognition efforts into account. We also are striving for strong connectivity and consistency between workweeks this year, so the cohort vibe solidifies and there's a recognizable intention to each of our events and meetups.

PRIORITIES FOR NEXT MONTH
What are we focusing on next?

  • engaging all fellows in our Weapons of Math Destruction themed book chat - December 19th
  • maintaining weekly checkins between the fellows, chat room conversation in gitter and mattermoz
  • planning the next group meetup in San Francisco (February)
  • informing the fellows' about WOW and the opportunity to connect with their communities while supported by Mozilla
