Bash, or Bourne Again Shell is a popular interactive command line interpreter. It is default CLI for Mac OSX and Linux.
Bash has a very long history, starting with the first unix shell, which was called Thompson Shell, in 1971. It was replaced by Mashey Shell in 1975. That it turn was replaced by Bourne Shell in 1977. It borrowed some features from ALGOL project.
In 1989, Bash was released as a free alternative to Bourne Shell under the GNU Project, which promotes the freedom of users to run, share, study and modify software.
