Privacy by Nick

Signal: @solitude.99

This "guide" is my personal list of recommendations for improving privacy in your life, but it assumes that you already have a certain base in your head, so I won't go into details, although I will write explanations where I think it is necessary.

Preface

Threat level

I will say right away that if you are planning to do something illegal (buying stuff, etc.), you should first familiarize yourself with such a concept as OPSEC and recommendations from .onion forums. In my case, the fight for privacy is more of a philosophical, rebellious issue, and I would say it's more like a hobby. My main goal is to minimize the amount of surveillance of my life by corporations by filtering Internet traffic and using open source software. So, in short, our threat level is roughly speaking “above average”, but not radical and paranoid. It can always be better, but, as for me, this is the perfect middle ground for an ordinary person. If your threat level is such that the FBI is on your heels, and Pegasus is being used to target your devices, there's nothing you can do. Its over for you, buddy.

Before you start

    +
  • In the settings, you'll need to find everything related to data collection. Look for anything related to advertising and personalization and turn it off. You will need to do the same in the settings of your Google and Apple accounts. Because there is no point in having all these applications when your every move is analyzed by the device itself and sent to the servers of Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc.
  • +
  • It's also a good idea to clean up unnecessary apps, as you can always download them later. Especially from Meta and Google.
  • +
  • Check app permissions, your calculator definitely doesn't need to know your geolocation. Use common sense.

About messengers and social networks

Remember that this is more of a hobby, so never sacrifice your social life or potential new connections to maintain this level of privacy. Family, friends, and relationships always come first. Of course, you can and should tell them about Signal, for example, the benefits of encryption, etc. But if your friends continue to use WhatsApp or Instagram, then whatever, have fun, live this life happily, even if unfortunately corporations will learn more about you than you would like.

Android

Tip
+

To achieve the best level of privacy, you should use custom roms. If you have a Google Pixel, I advise you to check out GrapheneOS. (You will have to sacrifice NFS and banking apps)

+
Info
+
    +
  • Most of the links lead to the FDroid app store, so I recommend downloading it first.
  • +
  • Using system applications on android is not a very smart idea, because almost all of them always send something to the servers of their owners, although AdGuard/Tracker Control helps with this.

Info
+
    +
  • You shouldn't expect privacy on Apple devices without iCloud Advanced Data Protection enabled in your iCloud settings.
  • +
  • Apple's system apps usually don't contain so many trackers and surveillance, so I don't think there's a need to look for a replacement.
  • +
  • But I still advise you to turn off constant listening from Siri while she is waiting for a command.

  • You will never be able to achieve privacy on Windows, it will be an eternal struggle after every update.
  • +
  • If you still don't use or don't know about Linux, then go ahead and try it. Here I will provide only two of the best distributions in my opinion. These two distributions are ideal if you don't want to make Linux your hobby, and if you just need a stable working machine with all the latest technologies that developers of kernels, protocols and distributions have to offer.

  • P.S For the nerds who will be shocked by the choice of Ubuntu, I have tried a dozen distros in recent years, and I am now using Ubuntu myself, and I highly recommend it to everyone.
