For usability it would be good if the number of visible axes ticks stays constant when zooming.

If you zoom in the total number of axis ticks over the full range should increase.

Getting the ticks to look good while zooming has turned out to be non-trivial.

But I wouldn't be too surprised if there was a better way of generating the ticks/labels.

That said, I can't say I actually understand your suggestion. Your two statements sound almost contradictory. I cannot visualize it.

Could you show an example (maybe from another backend) that shows what you mean?
