SCI standards

Compile a list of potential new areas for SCI standards (e.g., water, biodiversity, e-waste, circular economy)

Review main categories or areas of focus for potential new SCI (Sustainable Software Engineering Impact) standards beyond the existing carbon-focused SCI:

  1. SCI for specific applications or domains:
    • The group brainstormed several potential application areas, including:
      • AI
      • Blockchain/Bitcoin
      • Web
      • Media/AdTech
      • Gaming
      • Climate modelling and weather forecasting

Note: "A designated champion or lead for each new SCI variant is essential to ensure successful development and implementation."

  1. SCI for broader environmental metrics:
    • The group discussed expanding the SCI framework to cover other environmental impacts beyond just carbon, such as:
      • Water
      • Biodiversity
      • Health

There was a recognition that these broader environmental metrics may have overlapping synergies to be analysed.

  1. New specifications not directly tied to SCI: The group identified additional areas that may not fit neatly under the SCI framework, such as:
    • Procurement strategies
    • Circularity and e-waste

These were seen as potentially requiring new standalone specifications or standards rather than being SCI variants.
AI: Compile a comprehensive list of these three categories of potential new focus areas and present it to the steering committee for further discussion and prioritisation.
