Panamax upgrade on Linux (Debian)?

I'm getting this message:

Local Panamax Installer version:
0.6.3

*** Panamax Installer is out of date! Please run ($ brew upgrade http://download.panamax.io/installer/brew/panamax.rb
 && panamax reinstall) to update. ***

I've found documentation for upgrading on Linux in the release notes ( https://github.com/CenturyLinkLabs/panamax-ui/wiki/Release-Notes ) saying to do the same as is documented for the installation:

curl http://download.panamax.io/installer/ubuntu.sh | bash

but that will trigger a panamax init...

also, that process produces this error message:

A different VM with name panamax-vm has been created already. Please re-install or delete panamax-vm VM and try again.

what should I do?
